In the 19th century, Mikhail Lermontov wrote “Masquerade,” and in 2000, based on the work of the Russian classic, St. Petersburg authors composer Igor Rogalev and librettist Yuri Dimitrin created an original musical drama - an independent work in which music became the main character.
Director Nina Chusova about the future performance:
“Against the backdrop of the endless masquerade of life, dramatic love conflicts unfold...
In a world where lies and deception rule, where there is nothing real and everyone is busy looking for profit and pleasure only for themselves, Arbenin and Nina, Zvezdich and Elvira are hostages. What treacheries are in store for lovers, who will emerge victorious in the battle of light and darkness - the intrigue remains until the last minute of the performance, even if you know the plot. Moreover, the authors moved the action to 1914, and life itself tears off the masks from the heroes: the beginning of the First World War becomes a signal - the masquerade is over!
The emotionally rich vocal parts of the characters are monologues about unfulfilled dreams, repentance, love and yet the light that exists in everyone. Just as there is hope: the darkness will inevitably dissipate, giving way to the strength and purity of true love!”
