The Galina Vishnevskaya International Opera Singers Competition was first held in Moscow in 2006. Initiated by the great singer herself, it has immediately gained a reputation of a major Russian and international music culture event. The concept behind the Competition is to give young aspiring singers, — the participants, a chance to show themselves as singers of opera and no other theatre; that is why the program includes operatic repertoire only.
The Competition is established by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Moscow City Department for Culture and by the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre. The Founders and the Organizing Committee of the Competition have stated that the Young Singers Competition is to take place in Moscow every second year.
The Competition is held in four rounds: the preliminary elimination audition with the help of the video records; the first and the second rounds, accompanied by piano, where each contestant is due to perform three and two opera arias respectively, one of which should be Russian, and the third round where the contestants are due to perform two opera arias (one should be Russian), accompanied by a symphony orchestra. The Competition jury headed by Olga Rostropovich as its honorary president is represented by the world opera stars, major theaters’ directors and artistic agencies representatives. The four Competition editions saw more than 1000 young vocalists from Russia, CIS and foreign countries. The winners are engaged with the Russian and foreign opera theaters: the Bolshoi Theatre, the Mariinsky Theatre, The Moscow Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Academic Theatre, Helikon-Opera, theatres of Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Vienna, Rome, Paris, Frankfurt, Salzburg Festival and others.
The VI Galina Vishnevskaya International Opera Singers Competition will take place in Moscow in year 2016. The admission audition based on video recordings will last from January 15th till April 15th 2016.
