Biography

In 1998, he completed his studies in chorus conducting at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatoire (Boris Tevlin‘s class), and in 2000, he graduated from the Conservatoire as a symphony conductor (Mark Ermler‘s class), after which he went on to do postgraduate studies at the Conservatoire.
As a 4th-year student, Pavel Klinichev became a probationer-conductor at the Bolshoi Theatre. In 2001, he was promoted to Bolshoi Theatre conductor.

His repertoire includes:

Evgeny Onegin, Nabucco, Cilea‘s Adrianna Lecouvreur, Dargomyzhsky‘s Rusalka, Rimsky-Korsakov‘s Mozart and Salieri and The Snow Maiden;
and the ballets: Giselle, La Bayadere, Pugni‘s La Fille du Pharaon, Don Quixote, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Raymonde, Mozartiana to music by Tchaikovsky, Balanchine‘s Symphony in C to music by Georges Bizet, Agon, music by Stravinsky, Concerto Barocco to music by Bach, The Russian Hamlet to music by Beethoven and Mahler, La Sylphide, Fantasy on the theme of Casanova to music by Mozart, Chopiniana to music by Chopin, Petit‘s Notre-Dame de Paris to music by Maurice Jarre, Shostakovich‘s The Bright Stream, Bolt and The Golden Age, de Falla‘s Le Tricorne, Les Presages to music by Tchaikovsky, Gaite Parisienne to music by Offenbach, Herold‘s La Fille mal gardee, Carmen Suite, Stravinsky‘s Jeu de cartes, La Dame de Pique to music by Tchaikovsky, Melikov‘s A Legend of Love.

Klinichev contributed, as music director, to the production of Petit‘s Notre-Dame de Paris (2002) and revival of Grigorovich‘s The Golden Age (2006).

In 2003, he conducted Washington‘s National Symphony Orchestra, accompanying the Bolshoi Ballet who were performing at the International Ballet Festival, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

He took part in the Bolshoi Theatre Ballet Company and Orchestra season at Covent Garden (2004), and in their USA tour (2004, 2005).

Pavel Klinichev has conducted opera-gala concerts, including the Bolshoi Theatre Opera Gala at the Maryinsky and the gala-concert held as part of the Golden Mask National Theatre Festival.

At the Spoleto Festival USA, he conducted the Charleston Symphony Orchestra in a performance of the Bernstein-Robbins ballet Dybbuk (2004).

He conducted at the International Glinka Competition of Vocalists (2004) and at the International Elena Obraztsova Competition for Young Opera Singers (2005, Saint-Petersburg). Pavel Klinichev has conducted the Saint-Petersburg Philharmonia Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia, the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, the symphony orchestras of Saint-Petersburg, Saratov and Rostov-on-the-Don.

He has recorded a CD, Only Waltzes, with the Bolshoi Theatre Chamber Orchestra (on the Universal label).

Klinichev teaches at the Moscow Conservatoire.

He conducted the Korean Symphony Orchestra during the Bolshoi Ballet Company tour to Seoul (2004).

In the capacity of music director (and with the same orchestra), he participated in the Korean National Ballet productions of La fille mal gardee (2003) and The Sleeping Beauty (2004).
He works with the Universal Ballet Company (artistic director Oleg Vinogradov, Korea): for the 2005/06 season, he is the Company’s chief guest conductor.
