Alexander Tsymbalyuk

Born in 1976, the Ukrainian bass’ career is soaring, having given very successful company debuts at the Metropolitan Opera New York, Teatro alla Scala Milan, Royal Danish Opera Copenhagen and Maggio Musicale Fiorentino singing Mozart’s Requiem with Zubin Mehta. He has been immediately re-invited to all.

In the season just past his engagements included his company debut at Bayerische Staatsoper Munich and Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, a return to the Palau de les Arts ‘Reina Sofia’ in Valencia and Teatro alla Scala Milan as well as various engagements at Hamburgische Staatsoper as a member of the ensemble. He also joined Zubin Metha for concerts of Gurrelieder at the Wiener Musikverein.

Looking ahead Alexander will make his company debuts at Royal Opera House Covent Garden and Gran Teatro del Liceu Barcelona as well as returns to Metropolitan Opera, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia Bayerische Staatsoper Munich and, of course, to the Hamburg State Opera.

Alexander gained a master’s degree in vocal performance at the Odessa Conservatory in 2003. His teachers were amongst others: Paata Burchuladze, Prof. Kurt Moll, KS Thomas Moser and Veriano Luchetti. During and after his education he won numerous first awards including “International S. Trnavsky Competition” in Slovakia (2000), “The 5th Elena Obraztsova International Competition of Young Opera Singers” Moscow (2006), “The XIII International Competition of Young Opera Singers Riccardo Zandonai” Riva del Garda (2007) and “The XIII International Tchaikovsky Competition” Moscow (2007).

Alexander sang Banquo in Macbeth at the Opera de Wallonie as well as Parsifal and Turandot at the Palau de les Arts Raina Sofia in Valencia. As part of his ’Festcontract’ in Hamburg he also sang Le Nozze di Figaro, Turandot, Un Ballo in Maschera, Die Meistersinger, La Traviata, Rheingold, Rigoletto, Falstaff, Il Barbiere di Siviglia and a new production of Verdi’s Attila. In concert he appeared at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino to give his Verdi Requiem debut under the baton of Zubin Mehta, as well as Boito Mephistofeles (Prologue) with the Accademia Santa Cecilia conducted by Pappano.

Alexander’s repertoire includes Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Hortensio (La Fille du Régiment), Talbot(Maria Stuarda), Commendatore (Don Giovanni), Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), title role (Boris Godunov), Colline(La Boheme), Angelotti (Tosca), Timur (Turandot), Basilio (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Prince Gremin (Eugene Onegin), Surin (Pique Dame), Ferrando (Il Trovatore), Banquo (Macbeth), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Ramfis (Aida), Il Frate (Don Carlos), Pietro (Simon Boccanegra), Lodovico (Otello), Federico Barbarossa (La Battaglia di Legagno), Fafner (Das Rheingold), Titurel (Parsifal), Edler (Lohengrin), Biterolf (Tannhäuser), Nachwächter(Die Meistersingersinger von Nürnberg), Zuniga (Carmen)

In 2014 he took part in the Bolshoi Theatre production of Rigoletto, singing the role of the Sparafucile (conductor Evelino Pidò, director Robert Carsen).
