Bolshoi ballet to appear in Switzerland after 26-year interval

The Bolshoi Theatre tour will open the Festival of Russian Culture in Switzerland which has been timed to coincide with the 65th anniversary of the renewal of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Under the auspices of the Festival, which will continue throughout 2011, there will be exhibitions of works by Russian artists and concerts given by Russian musicians; the programmes of several Swiss music festivals will have a Russian ‘accent’, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra will pay tribute to the works of Russian composers, and the Swiss theatre director, Mario Bucciarelli, will do a production of Chekhov’s The Seagull in Lausanne.

The Bolshoi tour programme will consist of three performances of Giselle (Vladimir Vasiliev version), which will be presented at the Theatre de Beaulieu, Lausanne. Opened in the middle of the last century, this is Switzerland’s biggest theatre (with auditorium seating nearly 2000).
