On February 4 the Gala in memory of the unforgettable Ekaterina Maximova took place at the Bolshoi Theatre.
The Gala in memory of the prima ballerina assault Ekaterina Maximova that took place at the Bolshoi Theatre, where Maximova started her journey to the ballet Olympus, was a bright and memorable event. The program of the Gala "Everything that you have done. In memory of Ekaterina Maximova" included choreographic numbers created in different styles and representing different movements; the numbers were choreographed specifically for the Gala that Maximova's star students participated in.
The ballet community stated: "She has the most charming smile and the most beautiful instep". This was very true.
"She was open for everything new and talented; this was something she loved in other artists and choreographers." This is also very true. That is why many of those who loved her, still love and worship her and paid their tribute to the great ballerina.
Ekaterina Maximova was a unique ballerina and a great actress. She joined the Bolshoi Theatre Company right after she graduated from the Choreographic Institute; she danced all parts of the classical repertory, following the philosophy of her pedagogue Galina Ulanova: "The most important thing for a ballet dancer is the integrity of the performance and the integrity of the character… you should make every effort to understand the human soul and to make your dance more poetical and expressive".

The first time that the young ballerina had success abroad was in 1959 during the Bolshoi Season in the USA, where Maximova got the nickname "Baby Ballerina" for her lightness and grace, for her bright talent and charm. However, very soon the Baby Ballerina became a unique phenomenon in the world ballet community; she could dance anything from grotesque and farce to drama and tragedy. Her performance in several roles still is considered to be the model for others. The duet of Ekaterina Maximova and Vladimir Vasiliev, which was considered to be the best in the world, developed into the adagio of their lives.
Maximova and Vasiliev gained recognition for their interpretation of choreography by K. Goleizovsky, D. Bryantsev and ballets by Y. Grigorovich ("The Stone Flower", "The Nutcracker", "Spartacus" and "The Sleeping Beauty").
Having finished her dancing career, Ekaterina Maximova started working as a pedagogue-repetiteur with the Bolshoi Theatre and the Kremlin Ballet. When her students performed, she was backstage, repeating to herself: "I want them to dance better than I did…"
The fragments of the Mass by Bach, choreographed by V. Vasiliev and I. Tadmor (Israel) in a brilliant way, opened the Gala; the piece that is solemn and sad, like eternity, and exalted, as a very sincere prayer, was performed by the Bolshoi Ballet artists together with the Bolshoi Orchestra and Choir. Then the students of the Moscow Academy of Choreography presented a very touching number about the birth of the ballerina, staged by E. Bogdanovich. The Bolshoi Theatre stars conquered Norway
The performance of the Bolshoi Ballet brought new color to the "Northern Lights Festival" that has been organized in the city of TromsГё (Norway) for the last 25 years. This was only the second time that the Bolshoi Ballet has gone to Norway; the first Newsletter Ekaterina Maximova's dress from the ballet "Anyuta". Photo: Valery Modestov

February, 62014Newsletter This is one of the best places in the world to watch the northern lights. The director of the Festival Ulf Jensen says: "Several years ago we opened the University Square in winter. We decorated it with electric lights and were going to have a light show. And then suddenly the clouds disappeared and the northern lights shone on the dark sky. People were watching them and crying!"
For the past two weeks the only topic for discussion in this small town was the arrival of the Bolshoi Ballet. This is an important event for Norway; this is an incredible event for TromsГё. But there are no playbills. There was no need for playbills - everyone looked forward to this Bolshoi tour, which became the first in the last 50 years.
The Bolshoi Ballet artistic director Sergei Filin says: "As soon as we landed in Oslo, the first customs officer who looked at our passports started smiling. She looked like an icon. She was so kind and happy that the Bolshoi Ballet had arrived".
The Bolshoi artists had only several hours between rehearsals and the press-
conferences. They used this time to get some inspiration and look at the northern exotic landscape. At first they took the funicular, and then looked at the scenery from the top of the mountain. TromsГё was spread out before them. They would soon have to perform down there. The Bolshoi Theatre prepared a unique program for Norway, which included fragments from the best ballets. The Festival President Roar Dons said: "We were thinking what price we should have for the tickets. We decided that we would sell tickets for the Bolshoi Ballet performances at the price of 960 crones. This is twice as much as we usually charge for the tickets to performances that take place at TromsГё biggest hall. We were nervous. But the tickets for both galas were sold out on the Internet and via phone in five minutes!"
To see the Bolshoi Ballet perform, people came from all over Norway, as well as from the UK, the USA, Germany… There are only 600 seats in the hall. The stage is obviously too small for the Bolshoi artists. Although the stage was enlarged a couple of years ago, when the Mariinksy Opera Company came here.
The Bolshoi leading soloist Olga Smirnova said: "The minute we step on this stage Starting this week it will be possible to buy tickets on the Bolshoi Theatre website following the new rules. Advance ticket sales will be held on Saturdays.
One person will be able to buy two tickets for one performance or one concert of the block (series of performances of the same production)
As "Vechernaya Moskva" was informed by the Bolshoi press-office, this Saturday it will be possible to buy tickets for "La Traviata" (performances will take place on May
1, 2, 3th and 4 ), "Iolanta" (May 4 ) and "The Bright Stream" (May 1, 2 and 3 ). The tickets to performances and concerts on the Historic and the New Stages will be sold three months in advance; to the performances in the Beethoven Hall - two months in advance.
Disabled persons and veterans of the Great Patriotic War, Heroes of the Soviet Union, Heroes of the Russian Federation and Full Cavaliers of the Order of Glory will be able to buy tickets for half-price; special seats will be allocated in the stalls (four seats for performances on the Historic Stage and two - for the performance on the New Stage). These people will be able to take one accompanying person with them. There also will be special seats in the stalls allocated for persons in wheelchairs (six seats for the performance on the Historic Stage, and two - for the performances on the New Stage). An accompanying person will be given a seat nearby. Disabled people will be able to buy tickets for 100 ruble, while the accompanying persons will need to pay the full ticket price.
Sergei Filin carried the Olympic flame

In Krasnodar the Bolshoi Ballet artistic director Sergei Filin carried the Olympic flame for approximately 180 meters. He mentioned that he did not tell his doctors he would do it; this was a kind of "self-test". Mr. Filin is satisfied with the result and told the journalists, who surrounded him, that he was feeling well:
- I am very proud of the fact that our country has gathered in order to organize this world sports festival. I am just so overwhelmed. I am sure that this Olympic Games in Sochi will be the best!
The Bolshoi Ballet artistic director also added that he wanted to come to Sochi to watch the Olympic Games opening ceremony and several competitions as well.

On January 17 2013 Sergei Filin was attacked; his face and eyes was splashed with acid. The Bolshoi Ballet artistic director was taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with third degree chemical burns. Mr. Filin has undergone more than 20 surgeries. At the moment his left eye has 80% of the eyesight; he is still undergoing treatment for his right eye, but he already can see big symbols with it.

The great power of the singer's temperament showed in the role of Jose in the opera "Carmen"; this was his best role in the Western European repertory.
Jose ("Carmen")
G. Bolshakov also created a very expressive image of Arnold in the opera "William Tell". In this role he demonstrated his habit of making lyrical images more dramatic; this showed, for example, in the scene where Arnold learns that his father has been executed. The singer conveyed the virile character of this hero perfectly. As many of those who saw G. Bolshakov on the stage and heard him singing have mentioned, his performance was lyrical, but not sentimental. When he performed the part of Alfred in "La Traviata", even the most agitated scenes were not sugary and melodramatic, but were rather filled with the true feeling. He performed the varied repertory at the Bolshoi Theatre over many years; he is a part of the galaxy of the Bolshoi's great opera singers. We have published pictures from the Gala in memory of Ekaterina Maximova on the Bolshoi official pages in the social networks
We have also published an article in our regular column "Invitation to the Museum".

110 years ago, on February 5 a wonderful Soviet opera singer Grigory F. Bolshakov was born. We have published his rare pictures that are housed at the Bolshoi Theatre Museum in our regular column "Invitation to the Museum".
The portrait of G. Bolshakov
At an early age the soon-to-be singer discovered that he was keen on music and especially on singing. He entered electromechanical training college, but soon realized that singing was his true vocation. In 1927 he graduated from the Leningrad Musical College (class of the professor V.P. Grokholsky); he also took some private lessons with R.F. Nuvel-Nordi, the student of the famous baritone Antonio Cotogni. Before he joined the Bolshoi Theatre Company, he had worked at other theatres: in 1928 he was a soloist at the Leningrad Theatre of Comic Opera, in 1930-1936 - a soloist at the Kirov Opera and Ballet Theatre, in 1937-1938 - a soloist at the Saratov Opera and Ballet Theatre. In 1938 Bolshakov made his debut at the Bolshoi in the role of Davydov in the opera "Virgin Soil Upturned" by I. Dzerzhinsky and was invited to join the company.
Both critics and audience thought that the part of Vodemon in the opera "Iolanta" (1940) was one of his biggest successes. Bolshakov portrayed the character of this brave young man in a very convincing way; he also showed the commitment and nobility of his character and his deep, all-conquering affection for Iolanta. The scene where the desperate Vodemon finds out that Iolanta is blind was very dramatic; there was so much tenderness and pity in the singer's voice! The same year Bolshakov portrayed the character from the Georgian epos Abesalom in the opera "Abesalom da Eteri". His Abesalom was a fearless hero who loved his Eteri dearly and sacrificed his own happiness and his life for the woman he loved. Newsletter The Bolshoi Theatre in the Internet
