The rector of the Moscow State Academy of Choreography and the People's Artist of Russia Marina Leonova celebrated her jubilee on
February 18. She has climbed all steps of the ballet hierarchy: Leonova used to be a Bolshoi soloist and has been the head of the Academy for 11 years. She is convinced that "we have a good school and the Russian ballet is the best in the world". This year Marina th
Leonova celebrates the 45 anniversary of her creative career. She became one of the first ballerinas who performed title roles in productions of the famous Soviet ballet masters at the Bolshoi Theatre. The Moscow State Academy of Choreography became her second home for many years. It is at the Academy that she received her education and started teaching classical dance once she finished her career as a ballerina. In 2003 Marina Leonova was elected the rector of the Academy. She also holds another position that allows her to prove her great passion for ballet. Last year she became the head of the working group at the Public Council on education in the sphere of ballet and choreographic art.
Wayne McGregor: "I am looking for the kind of virtuosity that has nothing to do with pirouettes"
The British choreographer talks about upcoming Russian premieres and "The Rite of Spring" that was not staged at the Bolshoi Theatre
Selected quotes:

- I cannot tell now, because it is a secret. But I can say that I am working on the production of "Infra", which I have created together with the set designer Julian Opie
in Saint Petersburg. It will premiere at the Mariinsky Teatre on February 24. As you know, my ballet "Chroma" is on at the Bolshoi Theatre; it is a big success, the Bolshoi dancers are fabulous.

- We have many other joint projects, and I am happy to make some progress with discussing them.

- The right moment has gone. I would have been happy if I had had the chance to be the first to stage "The Rite of Spring" at the Bolshoi, but now they already have their own version of this ballet.

- After the well-known events the atmosphere at the Bolshoi Theatre seemed not very stable. I am close friends with Sergei Filin, and you know that he had many troubles at that time. But it is all water under the bridge now; today we look to the future with confidence. /…/

At the 2 All-Union Contest of Vocalists in the name of M.I. Glinka (1962) he was awarded the second prize; he was then sent to Teatro alla Scala singing school (Milan) for an internship. During the seasons of 1963/64 and 1964/65 he mastered his vocal technique in the class of E. Barra. Together with the conductor and the accompanist E. Piazza he prepared 4 roles; these were the parts of Duke and Ricardo ("Un Ballo in Maschera"), Rudolph and Cavaradossi. In 1964, being the part of the Bolshoi Theatre opera company, he performed at the Teatro alla Scala during
the first exchange tours of the two theatres. Having been awarded the 1 prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1966) he was transferred to the Bolshoi Theatre. In 1967-68 V. Atlantov was a Bolshoi Theatre soloist; there he performed 16 roles, 13 of which were new in the singer's repertory.
As Othello
His best roles were: Othello, German, Canio and Jose. Other two characters that were wonderfully portrayed by the singer were Don Juan ("The Stone Guest"), which he was awarded the RSFSR State Prize for in 1978, and The Pretender.
