July, 15 "Carmen" opera will premiere at The Bolshoi. The previous staging of masterpiece by Georges Bizet has been performing on the New stage, but the theatre's Music director Tugan Sokhiev decided that the one of the most famous, grand and loved operas definitely should be performed on the Historical stage:
"Carmen" opera clearly should be in The Bolshoi repertoire. But it has to be performed on the Historical stage. The scale of music and the scale of Bizet's dramaturgy demand this. And considering the audience's infinite love for this opera it certainly deserves the Historical stage".
Russian Academic Youth Theatre's artistic director Alexei Borodin has been invited as the stage director for the production. Maestro Sokhiev will be conducting, "Carmen" will be his first full-fledged staging at The Bolshoi. The theatre's Chief conductor promised to handle Bizet's score carefully and to avoid common opera clichés:
"I think after all there should be just one and only interpretation: we have Bizet's score and we have to trust the composer. Director's decisions are only the evocation of author's intentions… Yes, we took on a very popular opera, routine opera in a sense, an opera with lots of clichés. But we will try to wipe them out".
Premiere performances will take place from July 15 till 19.
