The Bolshoi Theatre Woodwind Quintet, founded one year ago, gives a concert to mark the release of its first CDThe Bolshoi Brass Quintet and the Violin Ensemble which been revived recently was founded by a group of musicians from the Bolshoi; the woodwind soloists and artists have also united their efforts and founded the Bolshoi Woodwind Quintet. The participants are: Nikolai Popov (flute) a laureate of international and all-Russian competitions, Honored Artist of Russia and all-Russian competition laureate Sergei Lysenko (oboe), the winner of the 1st prize at the N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov Competition in Saint Petersburg Sergei Petrov (clarinet), the artistic director of the project "Bassoon+" Andrei Rudometkin (bassoon) and Alexei Raev (French Horn) the laureate of all-Russian and international competitions, the winner of the "Yamaha Scholarship" prize and the Bolshoi Theatre's Board of Trustees Prize. The group started giving concerts in 2013, when they were "blessed" by Vassily Sinaisky, who was the Bolshoi's music director at that time. The Quintet recently performed at "The Night of Music" project (October 4th). However, this time the musicians present their own CD. The concept of the CD is unusual; the program includes only original pieces for woodwind quintet composed by Russian composers of the 19th and the 20th centuries. Alexander Alyabyev, one of the founders of Russian professional music and the author of numerous chamber instrumental pieces, was the first composer who started writing music for such ensembles. The quintet by Edison Denisov represents a very different epoch; this is one of the early pieces composed by the most prominent representative of the Soviet music avant-garde. Finally, there is the quintet "One Day in the Village", composed by Evgeny Svetlanov, an outstanding conductor, composer and pianist; a whole epoch in the existence of the Bolshoi Theatre is connected with the name of this musician… The CD (and the concert as well) also has pieces composed by the participants of the quintet; several of them are talented composers. There is a Fantasy on the theme from the opera "The Queen of Spades" by P. Tchaikovsky, written by Sergei Lysenko, and "Carnival of Animals and Insects" by Nikolai Popov. The famous music critic and composer Petr Pospelov will the MC. There still are some tickets left for this performance: http://tickets.bolshoi.ru/en/performance/7263/
