The Bolshoi Theatre's repertoire for the new theatre season
Vladimir Urin, Sergei Filin and the Bolshoi Theatre new chief conductor Tugan Sokhiev announced the new creative strategy. Kirill Serebrennikov will be invited to the Bolshoi Theatre; the ballet "Hamlet" will be staged to the music by Shostakovich. The journalist Anna Gara was at the Bolshoi and went backstage to figure out how the new theatre season will be different from previous ones.
There is a new revolution at the Bolshoi Theatre. Kirill Serebrennikov is a hero of our time; he will stage the ballet, based on Lermontov's novel. Music will not be classical either; it will be written by a Saint Petersburg composer Ilya Demutsky. The Bolshoi Ballet artistic director Sergei Filin brings back Soviet heritage - the ballet "Legend of Love", choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich. The company will present the version, first staged in 1961; no changes will be made to it. There also will be "Hamlet", but the audience will see a modern version of this story. The production team of foreigners is working on the ballet.
The Bolshoi Ballet artistic director
"In my opinion, this season will be rather busy. All productions are full-length ones. We will have to work a lot on them. Of course, corps de ballet will participate in these productions as well; therefore, having free time and vacancies is out of question. The whole company will be busy, because all productions are very different". The Bolshoi management will continue with the theatre cinema season. Seven new productions will be transmitted in 1000 cinemas in 50 countries of the world. The audiences will have a chance to watch live transmissions and recordings of such ballets, as "The Nutcracker", "Ivan the Terrible", "Romeo and Juliet" and others. In Moscow and Saint Petersburg cinema tickets will cost 450 rubles, in other cities - 350 rubles (approx. $12 and $14 respectively).
The Bolshoi Theatre General Director
"This is not the question of making money. Although this issue is important as well. We do get good money for transmissions of our productions in cinemas. We also get an enormous number of people who not only watch a production, but also see everything that is happening around this production. Before the transmission people are told what kind of production that is, who staged it; they also see how the set is changed during the intermission and watch interviews with artists and production teams' members".
Mr. Urin, Mr. Filin and the newly appointed chief conductor Mr. Sokhiev worked on the new repertoire together. The concert version of Tchaikovsky's "The Maid of Orleans" will be the first premiere of the season. It will be performed on the Historic Stage on September and will mark the 175th anniversary of the great composer. There will be a new opera for children as well - the director Dmitry Belyanushkin will stage "The Story of Kai and Gerda".
The Bolshoi Theatre music director and chief conductor
"The Bolshoi Theatre will start paying great attention to the children's audience. We do think that our current adult audience is wonderful. But we also need to think about the younger generation and about children that will come to watch productions that will educate them; this way they will grow to like opera".
The Bolshoi Theatre grand tours will start in November. At first the company will go to Japan. "Swan Lake" and "Don Quixote" will be performed there. Then there will be tours to Hong Kong and Brazil. The program will be different, though. The company will not tour Russia in the coming season. Audiences in Vladivostok and Novosibirsk will be able to watch opera and ballet productions of the main theatre of the country only in 2016.
