Violin solo and in ensembles

The Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra has always been famous for its virtuoso musicians; violin has always been a special instrument in the orchestra. Traditionally, a big lyrical adagio in every ballet was accompanied by a violin solo; therefore, outstanding musicians were invited to take a position of a soloist and a concert master. These violinists also influenced the general level of the violins' group. V. Bezekirsky, I. Zhuk, S. Kalinovsky, I. Soloduev, E. Grach and A. Kushner are just some of those violinists, who played solo parts in various concerts and performances at the Bolshoi Theatre (as one legend has it, violinists performed their solo parts on the "Tukhachevsky's violin" - an instrument, made by Stradivarius and restored by the disgraced Marshal). In 1931-1968 the Bolshoi Theatre used to have its own violin quartet; for thirty years, starting from 1955, the Violinists Ensemble of the Bolshoi Theatre, organized by Y. Reentovich, was one of the Soviet music fans' most favorite chamber collectives. Some of the best professionals have always worked as concert masters at the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra; all violinists are highly professional musicians as well. Many of them not only work at the theatre, but also teach and give concerts.

A sub-principal Elena Putnikova and such orchestra musicians, as Nadezhda Budnitskaya, Natalia Sorokina, Lyubov Kalashnikova, Olga Kochneva, Yulia Tyulkina and Igor Svichkarenko will demonstrate their art of playing violin solo and in ensembles at the concert that will take place on April 16th. The musicians will perform baroque sonatas by Vivaldi and Telemann, the famous "Passacaglia" by Handel and the "neoclassical" Ravel's sonata for violin and cello (this piece rarely is performed in concerts due to its particular modal and rhythmical difficulties), graceful miniatures by Bottesini, Kreisler and Elgar, romantic "Nocturne" by Schubert and Paganini' sonata for violin and guitar. The program of the concert also includes pieces by Albinoni, Pachelbel, DvoЕ™ák, Glazunov, Shostakovich and Piazzolla.

Concert masters of the orchestra Olga Zhmaeva (viola) and Mikhail Shumsky (cello), orchestra musicians Maxim Zolotarenko (cello) and Evgeny Stoyko (contra-bass), a concert master of the opera company, a laureate of an international competition Marina Agafonnikova (piano), as well as the Moscow Philharmonic's soloist Natalia Yakhont (harp) and a laureate of international competitions Dmitry Borodaev (guitar) will take part in the concert.
