November, 27 2014 The opera is staged by the director Dmitry Belyanushkin. This is the first time this opera is staged at the Bolshoi Theatre. "The Story of Kai and Gerda" is one of Banevich's best-known operas; this composer is a modern classic, who has gone down the history of the Russian theatre and cinema of the 20th - and the beginning of the 21st century, and composed music for numerous films and theatre productions. The opera was composed in the same year when the Afghan war started; it would seem that this was not the right time for a story like this one. However, it was staged at the Kirov (the Mariinsky) Theatre. The premiere was a success and the production has been performed for more than 30 years. This is the first time that "The Story of Kai and Gerda" is staged at the Bolshoi Theatre. The production team unites the young and the experienced. The set has been designed by Valery Levental; this guarantees that the audience will see some breathtaking beauty on the stage. The music director Anton Grishanin is a conductor at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre; he has conducted the ballets "Don Quixote" and "Swan Lake" at the Bolshoi. The stage director Dmitry Belyanushkin graduated from GITIS only two years ago; he has already become a winner of the International Competition for Young Opera Stage Directors "NANO-opera". Last year he presented the half-concert version of the opera "Le Nozze di Figaro" at the Bolshoi Theatre. The stage director Dmitry Belyanushkin. Photo: Damir Yusupov Mr. Belyanushkin told RIA NOVOSTI: "I have already had my first experience of working on a fairytale at the Yekaterinburg Opera and Ballet Theatre; I have staged Christmas music production there. This time I am working on a show at the main theatre of the country. This is a true gift that anyone would dream of receiving. This is a great honor and a great responsibility, so I am trying to put all my soul into this production and to devote all my efforts to it". According to the director, a production for children should have the best music, the best cast and the best set; this is exactly the way it is being done at the Bolshoi Theatre. Mr. Belyanushkin believes that a production for children should be dynamic, both in terms of the plot and in terms of the visuals. He explained: "I base myself on what the composer has written, and my main objective is to develop the author's idea as much as it is possible. The composer's idea is slightly different than Andersen's, the author of the fairytale. This always happens; the literary text and the music text are two independent pieces". The composer got rid of some scenes and added a new character, the Lamplighter, who is the narrator. He also composed the new prologue, where the trolls start the whole intrigue. Dmitry Belyanushkin said: "Together with the set designer Mr. Levental we have come up with an unusual image of the Snow Queen; in the films she has always been represented as an unapproachable beauty, beyond the reach of anyone. We considered that she should provoke not admiration, but resentment, because her world is dead and she herself is an image of death. So our Queen will be a bit scary. W e would like our young audience to have an urge to escape from the gloomy and cold atmosphere as soon as possible and to return to their grandparents, to their city and to their warm homes; we tried to create a contrast between the cold glossy beauty and all of those things". The director also stressed that the city of Odense that was mentioned in the fairytale was not some kind of a fictional place, but rather a real city where Andersen himself lived. He mentioned: "Banevich's opera and our production are about eternal family values, about the love and care of our relatives and about good family relations - all those things that are questioned and many try to destroy today". There will be several casts; they all star beginner and experienced singers, including participants of the Bolshoi's Young Artists Opera Program, the Bolshoi Opera Company's soloists of dif ferent generations and guest vocalists.
