Celebrations took place in St. Petersburg, Pyatigorsk, Moscow and in Penza Oblast. Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, came to the museum-reserve "Tarkhany", the Lermontovs' family estate, where the future literary genius was raised. Vladimir Putin had a look around the estate complex. All buildings in "Tarkhany" as well as the dam of the Barsky pond have been renovated. The President also had a look at the two-stored manor-house, where Mikhail Lermontov spent his childhood. Almost all furniture which was in this room two hundred years ago, has been re-created. There also are the poet's personal belongings and about five hundred of his pencil sketches. Vladimir Putin visited the chapel of the vault of the Lermontov family and put flowers on the poet's grave. The Bolshoi Theatre was the center of the celebration in Moscow. The gala-concert, marking the bicentennial of Mikhail Lermontov's birthday, took place there. Viewers of the TV Channel "Culture" had a chance to see the recording of the concert on Sunday at 6.40 p.m. The opera "Masquerade" by Alexander Mosolov had been prohibited for a long time; it had not been performed for many years. The author was accused of "formalism"; at first the Soviet power prohibited him, and later he was arrested. Only "Nina's Romance" was left in the archives; at the gala the orchestra version of the romance was performed. This was the world premiere of this piece. In the 20th century the interest to Lermontov's body of work has remained very strong, as well as it does today. Eduard Artemyev, a composer and a People's Artist of Russia considers: "He is not only a poet and a great philosopher; it looks like the time to discover him has not come yet". There were paintings of modern artists in the Bolshoi Theatre foyer. Famous artists and literary historians were ready to talk about their image of this poet. A literary historian Tatiana Molchanova said "Lermontov is about dignity and respect for people; but this dignity and this respect are expressed through mocking the platitudes and wickedness of the society. This is what Lermontov is about". The set was minimalistic; there were no complex decorations in order not to distract from the main focus, the poet's words. His word is very well-known to lots and lots of people from their high school years. The poet's body of work is also well-known thanks to romances by Glinka, Rubinstein and Balakirev. The singer Julia Mazurova admits: "My life has been connected with Lermontov for a long time, since I was studying at the conservatoire. There is a lot of power and passion in Lermontov's poems". It was the first time after the October revolution that pieces by Cui and Ippolitov-Ivanov were performed. The authors of the project tried not only to surprise the audience with music rarities, but also to demonstrate how Lermontov's poetry exists in dif ferent styles and epochs. Y uri Laptev, a director and a People's Artist of Russia, explains: "We wanted to show how he influenced other artists and how his creative work inspired them. We wanted to walk this path after Lermontov and to show what the world got and how it became more diverse". Evgeny Volkov, the music director of the project, says: "This concert is our big meeting with Lermontov; we meet with our geniuses every day and we move forward together with them. They teach us". Everyone said how relevant this poet and his works were today, using Lermontov's words: he is the hero of not only his or our, but, actually, any time.
