QUIZ:"Lady of the Camellias" at the Bolshoi TheatreNewsletter According to the Bolshoi spokeswoman Katerina Novikova, John Neumeier created his "Lady of the Camellias" in 1978 for the Stuttgart Ballet. He used to dance with this company, headed by the outstanding choreographer John Cranko. In 1973 Cranko suddenly passed away, and Marcia Haydée, the Stuttgart Ballet prima ballerina, asked her former colleague John Neumeier to support the company and to choreograph a new ballet. This is how "Lady of the Camellias" was created.
This is a large plot-based ballet in three acts with a prologue; it is based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas, fils. The production uses the music by Frederic Chopin. The set was created by Jürgen Rose, who has been the permanent co-author of production staged by John Cranko and later John Neumeier. All these factors ensured the phenomenal success of the production. During the 35 years of its existence it has become one of the most popular ballets in the world; it has been performed by the best dancers in many countries. Now "Lady of the Camellias" will be performed at the Bolshoi Theatre for the first time.
John Neumeier has already staged one of his signature ballets at the Bolshoi Theatre; it was "Midsummer Night's Dream", which premiered in 2004. Svetlana Zakharova performed the main female role. She will also star in "Lady of the Camellias". Edvin Revazov from the Hamburg Ballet, headed by John Neumeier, will be her partner.
At the moment the rehearsals for the productions are being held at the Bolshoi daily
by the ballet master. The premiere performances will start on March 20 and continue
on March 21, 22, 23 and 25.

This singer has a unique voice; she has performed such big parts, as Vanya in the opera "Ivan Susanin" by M. Glinka, Marfa in "Khovanshchina" by M. Mussorgsky, Lyubasha in "The Tsar's Bride" by N. Rimsky-Korsakov and many others.

- My mother Lyubov V. Popova was a People's Artist of Ukraine. I was born in Ukraine, but my parents came from Siberia; they moved to the European part during the war. My mother stayed in Kharkov after it was liberated; she started singing in a choir and then became a People's Artist of Ukraine. I was not an early child. I was almost born at the theatre, because there were not such long maternity leaves as there are now. Starting from my first days I stayed at the theatre. When my mother was singing, I was lying in her dressing room. I did not know any other life.

- I guess I started singing the minute I was born! When I did not even talk, I was already humming something, and got the melody right. At the Kharkov Theatre everyone was saying: "Sasha sings in tune better than anyone else" <…>. I see no alternative: if a person can live without singing, I guess, he should not be singing then.
